Yucky Oil, Pretty Oil.

So someone went and crashed a cargo ship into the bay bridge and dumped a bunch of fuel into the bay that ended up all over the beaches here in SF. The fuel oil has caused all kinds of problems for the wild life, fisher persons and surfers (a.k.a. Me!). The local beach and water was closed for a few weeks and some of the other surf spots were closed for a few days. Our beach was just opened to walk on last week so we went down to check it out. A park ranger guy was cleaning up the oil and showed us what it looked like and where it was most likely to be so we could avoid it. I have to say as bad as this stuff is for the environment the small blobs we saw were kind of pretty. They were mostly about the size of a dime or smaller. Here is what one looked like up close and in 3D.

Another picture. The actual kind of fuel also had sort of an ominous and at the same time interesting name, bunker fuel.

It's pretty but don't touch, it's supposed to be really bad stuff.

Plane Down! In 3D!

It looks like someone fell asleep at the stick. At least that cockpit looks intact so I'm going to guess the pilot walked away. Maybe next time he should have a cup of 3D espresso!

I've been into 3D a long time

And here is a photo from sort of my early days.

I was scanning in a bunch of old photos last weekend when I came across some old 3D Polaroids I had taken. I think they are from around 1985 give or take a few years.

I used to use my parents' Polaroid and film and just walk around taking 3d pictures. I think I used up a lot of their film which was probably not cheap. Good thing they came out with digital cameras or I would be broke. Oh, the picture is of the patio of the house we lived in at the time. Pretty boring except that it's a 3d photo I took 20ish years ago -:]

I guess bikes can't read

The crazy bikes in SF apparently can't read or have a blatant disregard for the law.


Or maybe they were just protesting? This one seems to have come to the wrong protest -;]

Actually there was a huge free music festival in the park called Hardly Strictly Bluegrass and a huge section of the park was closed to cars and bikes. There were crazy numbers of people there. So crazy we ended up leaving because you had to sit so far away from any of the stages or deal with wall to wall people to get up close. We did get there early and catch just about the only Bluegrass act. They were pretty fun. I liked the bike impound area the best though.

Fozzie Bear Looking Deflated

This guy has been greeting us on our weekly walk to our favorite little cafe. I think he's been hanging out for about two months now. I think he looks a lot like Fozzie Bear after he pooped out all his stuffing.


And of course in 3D!

As deflated as he might be, he always seems to have a smile for us -:]

Mangy Goose?

So this one is from my birthday as well but it deserves a post of it's own. During my birthday walk in the park with Linda we stopped for a break at a little pond were we saw this fellow.

Linda sort of knows all kinds of birds from a previous life in which she was an avid bird watcher or something like that. Any way she had no idea what this was. It was hanging out with a bunch of geese but other than the size didn't really look like any of the other geese. So what is it? We are thinking maybe it's just a goose with the mange. Linda tried to look it up on line with no luck.

Anyone know what kind of bird this is or is it just a mangy goose?

My Birthday Was in August...

...and here comes my October post from my August birthday.

So what did I do? Linda took me out to botanical garden in Golden Gate Park where they had a plant show on display called "Chomp". Guess what kind of plants they were. Any way we did our usual walk (Linda is fond of calling it a death march) from our place to our park destination. Along the way we came across this giant purple head we had for some reason never seen.

How could we have missed a 20' tall purple head all this time?

CHOMP!

So as you may have guessed the plant show was a carnivorous plant show! The Venus fly traps say "CHOMP"!

The show was pretty small but really cool. It was one medium size room that was super warm and misty and filled with plants that would rather eat you than give you the time of day. This is a section of the center display which was really cool and had chomping plants all around it. I made sure not get to close.

I know these small fuzzy pitcher plants don't look it but they are killers!

Some of the fireworks we saw out back from our fire escape.

We now live in "TSUNAMI" country!

These just popped up in the last week or two and I'm not sure whether or not to be scared or giggle out loud. I mostly just giggled out loud and took these pictures.

Actually this sign is a little unclear. Is it an evacuation route for Tsunami's or in case of Tsunamis? And it also doesn't exactly indicate which way to go.

This one is a little more clear. I think it means we should do mountain climbing if a Tsunami is coming.

I think it means we go up this 3D hill. This is about 100 feet from our place.

S.T.U.N. Runner

It all started with a random conversation at during breakfast at work and turned into S.T.U.N. Runner! A friend and me were eating some eggs and bacon or a muffin or something in the work cafeteria on a Wednesday morning. We were talking about our favorite Nintendo DS game Advance Wars DS. That turned to bigger and better things like that I loved take games which lead the conversation the the classic Battle Zone! Then for some reason we came to a game which we both remembered fondly but could not remember the name of. About 30 min later I was sitting at my desk when I got link from my friend. I opened it and it was a web page about the game we had been trying to remember the name of, S.T.U.N. Runner. So I read through the page and when I got to the bottom I noticed something funny. The page had a link that said there was an actual S.T.U.N. Runner up for auction on Ebay for $279. What quickly followed was a round of emails, phone calls and a visit to our building's head of facilities. So my co-worker was in for 50% of the $279 and $198 shipping and our head of facilities said if we won the auction he would find a place in the building for us to put it. One week and about $500 later we were the proud owners of one of the coolest arcade games ever, S.T.U.N. Runner!

Do you smell something?

So the other day I had band practice after work but had go back to work for a few minutes to check on some things before going home. It was about 9pm when I got to work. The parking lot was mostly empty and the sun was just setting. I parked right at the front doors and jumped out of my car to go into work but there was a little surprise, make that 4 little surprises waiting for me! As I turned from my car to the entrance I stopped dead in my tracks because about 20 feet away and right between me and the doors were 4 little skunks! My first reaction was to get right back into my car. I thought about it for a second and realized how freaking cute the 4 baby skunks were and that I had my camera with me so against my better judgement I grabbed my camera got back out of the car and slowly approached the skunks. I also noticed the mother skunk about 10 feet from the babies but farther away from me and in the bushes. I don't think she noticed me or if she did she knew I was not a threat because I must have been giving off the "Shit I'm scared I'm going to get sprayed by a bunch of skunks" smell. Any way I got a couple of not so great photos then they ducked back in to their hole which was all of about 10 or 15 feet from the front door of PDI/DreamWorks. They were so cute and I don't think the pictures do them any justice.

This one is looking right at their hole which is right in the corner of the sidewalk where the white leg is. Every time I made a little noise the little ones would rush back to the hole for a little bit.

Mom was back in the bushes, I think you might be able to just see her right above little guy in front there.

And this is the front entrance at 9pm. The skunks live right under the red cone on the right. I was told they were going to try and remove them. I actually saw them on 3 different nights but I checked a few more times and there was no sign of them. Maybe Mom heard they were going to be kicked out and decided to leave on her own terms. I hope they found a nice new home.

Casual 3D Invasion

The ship wreck attracts more than just people

So we got up at this morning at low tide, well maybe an hour after low tide since it's Sunday and low tide was at about 8am, and went down to look at the ship wreck again and look who we found!

This little guy was about 100 yards from the ship wreck. At first we thought it was a small dog that some people were taking pictures of. We were walking that way any way and as we got closer It seemed like maybe it wasn't a dog after all. It's cool to be able to walk across the street to see part of a 130 year old ship wreck and find cute little sea lion pups hanging out. We called the Marine Mammal center to report it and they said they would send someone to check it out.

Here s/he is in 3D! I asked if s/he could hold still for my 3d picture but I guess s/he doesn't understand my east coast accent and moved a little so you may notice the head looking a little funny in 3d.

Lost in SF

Yesterday was a very sad day for us here in SF because we lost one of our best friends, Butter, to lung cancer. Thanks for putting up with me and letting me hang out with Linda. We'll miss you.

A 3D ship wreck and some numbers

So on our walk today we came across some stuff at the edge of the surf we have see a few times in the past few weeks but until now the tide was to high to get a close look at it. Today we could get right up to it. Mostly before we just saw the pole and something biggish under the shore break. We called it a sub because of the periscope. Today we figured we would see a sub. Nope. I took a look and decided it was a ship wreck. Yeah, right, probably just some old part of a pier or something. I took this 3d picture (it's hard to tell but take a look with some red/blue glasses). Then went home and looked up Ocean Beach ship wreck. Wow, it was a ship wreck! From 1878 no less! It was called the King Philip and was a three masted clipper ship. Clipper ships were apparently about as fast as ships got back in the day and were used for hauling valuable cargo. Cool! But what kind of cargo did this Ferrari of the high seas carry you ask? The best cargo of all, Bird Poop! Hell yeah! Any way you can read more and see videos about the wreck at these links:

We also spotted this tiny abacus which was most likely before today last used to calculate the strength of the King Philip's anchor line...

...and today to calculate the advanced 3d formulas needed to make the great 3d image below.

I'm not totally up on my abacus skills so I'm not sure if it is set to zero or to our national deficit.
